Free Online ReqIF Validator

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ReqIF?

ReqIF stands for Requirements Interchange Format and is an international standard for exchanging requirements. Learn more here.

What does this ReqIF Validator do?

It checks whether your ReqIF files conform to the ReqIF standard. Upload a .reqif, .reqifz, or .zip, and receive errors and warnings that explain what’s invalid or problematic. Behind the scenes, it is conducting all checks that the Consequent Validator performs. You get the same results if you open the file in ReqIF Studio or run the command line Consequent tool.

What do the error codes mean?

You can download this validation cheat sheet with more detailed explanations.

Which file formats are supported?

The validator supports all common ReqIF formats:

  • .reqif
  • .reqifz
  • .zip (containing .reqif files)

What is the maximum file size?

Files up to 500 MB.

How long does validation take?

Time depends on file size and object count. Roughly 1 second per 200 SPEC-OBJECTs, plus some overhead. Large files may take minutes.

Is my data secure and private?

Yes! Our data centers are located in the EU and we will delete them 24 hours after processing.

Are my files stored permanently?

No. We delete data after 24 hours.

What's the difference between errors and warnings?

Errors: Violations of the ReqIF standard.
Warnings: Best-practice issues or non-critical violations.

Note that many tools are tolerant with respect to some errors, like maxLength for text. So even though you are getting errors, your tool might be forgiving. But don't count on it!

What does SPEC-OBJECT count mean?

Typically, this represents the number of requirements in your file.

What happens if I upload a non-ReqIF file?

Only .reqif, .reqifz, and .zip are allowed; other extensions are rejected.

What if my file has embedded images or attachments?

The validator lists non-.reqif files it finds in archives, but these are not validated. However, the validator checks whether embedded elements are present.

Can I use this tool programmatically or via API?

No. If you want to have a solution that you can use programmatically, you can use the command line Consequence validator. If you need a custom solution, contact us.

What should I do if validation fails with an error?

Check the detailed messages for the cause; fix the reported issues in your files and re-upload.

Is this service free?

Yes, this service is completely free of charge, no strings attached.

Is this an official ReqIF validation tool?

Yes, as the Consequence validator, that performs the checking, had been commissioned by the Prostep organization as part of the standardization process.

Can I download the validation results?

After validation you find a button in the top right to download the validation result as JSON.

What happens if the server is busy?

Processing is queued if all slots are in use. You’ll see a “Server capacity reached” message; try again shortly.

Who is behind this service?

This services is operated by reqif.academy, owned by Formal Mind GmbH. The validator engine is Consequent by Formal Mind GmbH.

Can I use this for commercial projects?

Yes, you are free to use this tool in a commercial context.

Why does my valid ReqIF file show warnings?

Warning typically represent violations of best practices. Most warnings are violations of the Prostep Implementor Guide.

How do I report issues with the validator?

You find a support button on the lower left of the validator (and on this page as well).

Does the validator check the content of my requirements?

No, the validator only checks the validity of the file structure.

Can I validate multiple files at once?

No. But keep in mind that a .reqifz archive can contain multiple .reqif files (which might be connected via SpecRelations). The validator checks all files in an archive, including the SpecRelations across files.

What version of the ReqIF standard is supported?

The validator supports all ReqIF versions, currently 1.0.1, 1.1 and 1.2.
